Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes
This hearty, comforting meal is made with savory ground beef and a rich, flavorful gravy, all served over a bed of creamy mashed potatoes. It’s the perfect combination of flavors for a cozy dinner.
Ingredients:
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 4 large russet potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1/2 cup milk (more if needed)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 2 cups beef broth (or water with bouillon cubes)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional, for added depth of flavor)
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking the beef)
Instructions:
1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:
- Peel and dice the potatoes, then place them in a large pot and cover with cold water.
- Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes for about 15 minutes, or until fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, and mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm while you prepare the beef and gravy.
2. Prepare the Ground Beef and Gravy:
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Sprinkle the flour over the cooked beef and stir to coat evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Add the Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce (if using), and thyme.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened. Stir occasionally and add salt and pepper to taste.
3. Assemble the Dish:
- Spoon a generous portion of mashed potatoes onto each plate.
- Top with the ground beef and gravy mixture.
4. Serve and Enjoy:
- Serve immediately, and enjoy this comforting meal!
This meal is perfect for a cozy dinner, and you can even add some vegetables like peas or green beans on the side to round out the dish.
